Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Search Engine Optimisation is important

The worst thing that can happen is someone searching for your products ends up at your competitor's website, just because their pages are more search engine friendly than yours.

Search Engine Optimisation tips

Semantic mark-up: Pages need to be coded (html & css) in such a way that important products, phrases, etc. are correctly coded as headings in html (h1, h2, etc.), and general paragraph text correctly coded in ‘p’ tags.

Alternative text: Where important titles, product names, etc. are implemented as a graphic file, there needs to be ‘alt’ text in the html to describe it, otherwise it will not be indexed by search engines.

Page titles: Page titles need to accurately reflect those phrases you wish search engines to associate with a page. For example, a page on 'HP 4350N Mono Laserjet' needs to have that in the title, rather than ‘Our Products’.

Linking Strategy: The other pages and external websites that link to your SEO'd page also determine search engine ranking. Where possible, pages that link to yours should have similar content, and the links should be the same wording as target terms: i.e. "HP 4350N", as opposed to just "link" or "here".

Repetition: Generally, the more you repeat your important search phrases (products, etc.) within reason, the better. Specifically in: page titles; headings; graphic alt text; main paragraph text; and preferably also in the domain name.

How do Usability and SEO go together?

Why are we offering an SEO service? Good question!

Many of the skills required in producing usable, accessible pages are now the same as those for improving search engine rankings

No more Voo Doo

Put bluntly, just having 'h' tags and cleanly coded XHTML will have a dramatic effect on the search engine ranking of your pages.

The relevance of these core skills has overtaken the claimed insider knowledge and black magic of SEO.

Our SEO experiment

To hone our skills in SEO we maintain several pages. Google "Microkorg" to see how we're doing with the page microkorg.co.uk, or "Yamaha xs8" for stevesrants.co.uk.
